OUR VALUES : FAIR PRICES & SOCIAL SOLIDARITY ECONOMY

ADEL and its producers agree on prices which are acceptable both for them and for the consumers. The prices are stable throughout the year. ADEL gives the producers an advance payment, which is later deducted monthly against the quantities of production received. If there is a loss, ADEL will bear it. If production is successful, it is a motivation for the producers to continue using the guidance they are trained on. It is aslo a way to ensure a salary to marginalized farmers. ADEL also collects the products directly from the farms and cooperatives, so that the transportation, time and human resources' costs for the farmers are reduced, and they concentrate their efforts on the farming and quality of the products.

AGRO-ECOLOGY

Climate change, water scarcity, the high cost of agriculture inputs, the small agriculture units, food safety issues because of chemical usage all invite us to explore sustainable solutions. ADEL believes that agro-ecological techniques can respond to some of these challenges. Agro-ecology is based on applying ecological concepts and principles to optimize interactions between plants, animals, humans and the environment while taking into consideration the social aspects that need to be addressed for a sustainable and fair food system.

Agro-ecology in Palestine started 15 years ago, and faced a lot of criticism and opposition, but it is currently experiencing a rapid growth among farmers. ADEL’s applicatation of agro-ecology in farming has brought the following tangible results:

  • 50% of the water consumption saved, thanks to the use of spongy soil and under-straw cultivation techniques;

  • 70% of the production costs lowered, due to the reduction of chemical use. This results in increase of income for farmers;

  • Preservation of the health of farmers, thanks to their reduced exposure to pesticides;

  • Reduction and recycling of agricultural waste, with the collection of organic residues and composting as a natural fertilizer;

  • Enhancement of the fertility of large areas of soil,with the development of beneficial worms and bacteria;

  • Increase of Palestinian farmers’ commitment to agro-ecology.
